Setup for Apache Web Server Administration for Linux Training

Hardware Requirements

1. A modern computer running a recent Intel or AMD chip.
2. At least 2GB of memory (RAM) to support running both the host and guest virtual machines.
3. Your computer must be equipped with a 64-bit operating system to install the required software.

Operating System Options

• Windows 10 or later
• Mac OS X
• CentOS 7 or greater
• Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7 or greater

Download Virtual Hard Drive

1. Click or copy/paste the link below to download the virtual hard drive (vmdk) file. The file is very large, so please prepare for a download that may take up to several hours. This single file contains their entire virtual hard drive that has been customized for your course.

Install Oracle Virtual Box

• Download Oracle Virtual Box.
• Install Virtual Box on your computer using the default installation options.

Create New Machine

1. Launch Virtual Box if it is not already running.
2. Click on the New button at the top-left of the window. The new virtual machine wizard should launch.
3. Enter a Name for the virtual machine using the details below, then select Linux for Type and select Red Hat (32 bit) for Version. Click Continue.
4. On the next screen you will be required to select the amount of memory (RAM) to allocate to the virtual machine. At least 512 MB is recommended, but the more you can provide, the better the performance will be. Here is the amount we recommend based on the amount of RAM in your host (physical) machine.
   1. 2 GB on host -> 512 MB for virtual machine
   2. 2-4 GB on host -> 1024 MB for virtual machine
   3. 4-8 GB on host -> 2048 MB for virtual machine
5. After entering the amount of RAM for the virtual machine, click Continue
6. For the hard drive, select the Use an existing virtual hard drive file option, and then click on the Folder icon to browse to the vmdk file. Select the vmdk file that you downloaded and click Open.
7. Click on the Create button to create the virtual machine using these settings. After the machine has been created it will appear in the list of virtual machines in the left pane of the Virtual Box window.

Start Virtual Machine

1. Launch Virtual Box if it is not already running.
2. Select the virtual machine from the list in the left pane of the Virtual Box window, and then click on the Start button in the toolbar at the top of the window.
3. The virtual machine window should launch, followed by the boot process for the guest operating system.
4. You should see the CentOS GUI desktop screen after the boot process. The password is osboxes.org. You should now see the CentOS desktop. If not, contact Webucator technical support.

Install Virtual Box Guest Additions

• NOTE: The Guest additions are already installed in the image but if you are still having issues with the resolution, you can reinstall the additions with the instructions below.
• The virtual box guest additions enable hardware support and integration between your guest and host operating system, enabling better mouse control and high video resolutions.

1. Start the virtual machine if it is not already running.
2. After the machine has started and you have logged in (if necessary), choose the Devices > Insert Guest Additions CD image... from the menu for the virtual machine.
3. This will insert a disk into the virtual machine, just as if you were inserting a CD/DVD into a physical computer.
4. The setup will automatically start. Follow the prompts to install the guest additions software. Your guest operating system may prompt you for authentication to complete the installation. Use the details below.
5. After installing the guest additions software be sure to restart your virtual machine's operating system.
