How to Set Up for Introduction to HTML Training
Required Software
- Operating system:
- Windows 10 or later
- Mac: OS X Mountain Lion (version 10.8) or later
Instructions
Creating the Webucator Folder
The first step to setting up for your course is to create the folder in which you will store your class files: Create a new folder named Webucator wherever you want, but make sure you remember where it is. A good location would be the root of the C drive on Windows or the Documents folder on Mac.
Getting the Introduction to HTML Class Files
- Download the class files found at the bottom of this page or within your self-paced course.
- Unzip the class files into the Webucator folder. This will create a folder called something like HTM102-#.#.#. Change the name of the folder to HTML (or something recognizable to associate it with the course). The folder structure should look something like this:
Windows
Mac
Visual Studio Code
(You can use any editor that you like; however, if you don't have a preference, we recommend Visual Studio Code.)
Instructions assuming you use Visual Studio Code as the editor.
- Download Visual Studio Code for your operating system.
- Install Visual Studio Code.
- Instructions for Windows. Use the installer for Windows.
- Instructions for Mac.
- Open Visual Studio Code.
- From the File menu, select Save Workspace As…
- Save the workspace as HTML within the Webucator folder you created earlier.
- If Visual Studio Code's Explorer panel isn't open, open it by clicking the files icon on the upper left (circled below in orange). Then click the Open Folder button.
- From the resulting dialog, select the HTML folder and click Add. If you get a dialog asking if you trust the authors of the files, click Yes.
- You will now see the HTML folder in Visual Studio Code's Explorer panel (your list of folders may be different):
- Install the Open HTML in Default Browser extension to make it easy to open HTML files in your browser. If you need help installing the extension, see the video on this page. Note that there are many extensions for accomplishing this same thing. We recommend starting with this one, but you are welcome to try other as well. You can search the Visual Studio Market Place and try any of the many free extensions there.
Congratulations. You are all set for your course.
